A Brief History of Santa Fe
The Spanish explorer Coronado, arriving around
1540, was greeted by the pueblo Indians whose ancestors, the
Anasazi or ``Ancient Ones'' had roamed the landscape for thousands
of years. The city was officially founded in 1609 and later developed
into a booming trading post joining the Camino Real from Mexico
City to the east via the Old Santa Fe Trail. Cowboys, kings,
artists and nature lovers have flocked to the ``City Different,''
where three cultures strive to learn from each other.
A Modern Perspective
Climate:
Approximately 300 days of sunshine a year,
with 13 inches of rainfall and 32 inches of snow in the city.
(The surrounding mountains receive substantially more snow --
a good thing for our ski area.) The summer daytime temperatures
average 75-85; summer nights average 55-65. Winter temperatures
range from 20-50 on average during the day, and drop below freezing
at night.
Recreation:
There are 4 ski areas accessible to Santa
Fe, including Taos Ski Valley; three golf courses; cross country
skiing; glorious hiking; fabulous fishing; and sunset gazing
all year round .
